The power inverter will deliver better power efficiency because of multiple power point trackers and less dc losses. Danfoss has made a cost comparison between a power inverter and power plant and a solar inverter power plant. power inverter power plant is cheaper and better.

I know the Spanish market and preferences have changed in terms of government-subsidized rates. Indeed a solar power inverter is cheaper than several power inverters and further its MTBF is higher than in the case of the power, work less stressed and they can also provide several MPPT based on the configuration we use.
From my point of view for an installation of 5/10 MW solar inverters always recommend against power inverters but is just an opinion. more...

Your energy output will depend on the selected inverter efficiency. However, energy output for solar inverters are much higher than for power inverters. Therefore your installation with solar inverters will be much more efficient and therefore much cheaper. Please compare energy output to ohmic wiring losses and inverter efficiency.

Directly from PVSYST simulation for 1.063MW AC tracking system with 4,620 Schott Poly 230W PV Modules for Northern Arizona:
    1. Kaco solar Inverters Blueplanet XP100U-H4:
Qty: 10 inverters, Produced Energy 2250 MWh/year, Specific prod. 2118 kWh/kWp/year, Performance Ratio PR 78.3 %, Horizontal global irradiation 1910 kWh/m², Ohmic wiring loss -9.7%, Inverter Loss during operation (efficiency) -3.8%.
    2. SMA Sunny Boy SB6000US inverters:
Qty: 150 inverters, Produced Energy 2098 MWh/year, Specific prod. 1974 kWh/kWp/year, Performance Ratio PR 73.0 %, Horizontal global irradiation 1910 kWh/m², Ohmic wiring loss -14.8%, Inverter Loss during operation (efficiency) -3.9%

Why is the Ohmic loss so high in the power inverters as compared to solar inverters ? Its OK with the PVSYST comparisions theoretically, however making a consious decision for choosing between the two types, we also have to look at the plant availability factor....which I think would surely be highier for power inverters. more...
