Taste receptor type 2 member 38 (TAS2R38) encodes a seven-transmembrane G protein-coupled receptor that controls the ability to taste glucosinolates, a family of bitter-tasting compounds found in plants of the Brassica sp. Synthetic compounds phenylthiocarbamide (PTC) and 6-n-propylthiouracil (PROP) have been identified as ligands for this receptor and have been used to test the genetic diversity of TAS2R38. Although several allelic forms of TAS2R38 have been identified worldwide, there are two predominant common forms (taster and non-taster) found outside of Africa. These alleles differ at three nucleotide positions resulting in amino acid changes in the protein (A49P, A262V, and V296I) with the amino acid combination PAV identifying the taster variant (and AVI identifying the non-taster variant).

Human Taste receptor type 2 member 38 (TAS2R38) ELISA Kit employs a two-site sandwich ELISA to quantitate TAS2R38 in samples. An antibody specific for TAS2R38 has been pre-coated onto a microplate. Standards and samples are pipetted into the wells and anyTAS2R38 present is bound by the immobilized antibody. After removing any unbound substances, a biotin-conjugated antibody specific for TAS2R38 is added to the wells. After washing, Streptavidin conjugated Horseradish Peroxidase (HRP) is added to the wells. Following a wash to remove any unbound avidin-enzyme reagent, a substrate solution is added to the wells and color develops in proportion to the amount of TAS2R38 bound in the initial step. The color development is stopped and the intensity of the color is measured.
