Resistin is a peptide hormone belonging to the RELM (Resistin-Like Molecule) family that also includes RELMα, RELMβ, and RELMγ. In mice, resistin is secreted in high levels by adipocytes, and overexpression has been linked to insulin resistance and obesity. The link between resistin and glucose metabolism in humans is still unclear, and it has instead been found to play a role in the inflammatory process. The main source of resistin in humans is peripheral blood monocytes, which upregulate expression in response to IL-6 and TNFα. Elevated levels of circulating resistin are associated with chronic inflammatory conditions and cardiovascular disease. |
