HDV is a defective virus, which can propagate only in the presence of the hepatitis B virus. Its route of transmission is mainly through blood transfusion or using blood products, also can be through close contact, mother-to-child vertical transmission and etc.
HDV infection along with HBV leads to more serious liver disease than that of HBV infection alone. It is a superinfection, easy to result in severe hepatitis, chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis and even primary liver cancer.
