Dextrans are naturally synthesized polysaccharides with good water solubility, low toxicity and varied molecular weights. Dextrans modified with dyes have been successfully used as long-term tracers for live cells. Fluorescent amino dextrans, contain amino groups which can be reacted with crosslinking reagents such as glutaraldehyde.
