Instructions for use 1. Place the Bowie & Dick Test Pack horizontally with the label facing up in an empty vacuum-assisted sterilizer chamber, in the bottom/front of the sterilizer rack, and over the drain.
2. Run the sterilizer for not more than 3.5 min. - 134 ºC / 4 min. - 132 ºC. Interpretation of results After completing the cycle, retrieve and examine the chemical indicator sheet. Satisfactory test It is indicated by a test sheet that shows uniform dark brown/black color development. Such a test indicates rapid steam penetration, adequate air removal and lack of significant air leaks. Unsatisfactory test It is caused by an air pocket within the chamber and indicates incomplete air removal from the chamber, poor quality wet steam, superheated steam and/or non-condensable gases in steam supply. If a non-uniform color change is noted, it should immediately be reported to the supervisor and that sterilizer should not be used until examined for possible malfunction. Recall and quarantine the loads sterilized in that machine until it is certain that the machine has not failed before. Warning sheet If there is no evidence of a black or darker color than the reference color in the circle, the equipment must be examined for possible malfunction. Warning Do not use a Bowie & Dick Test Pack in gravity displacement steam sterilization cycles (where there is no pre-vacuum phase to check) or in other kinds of sterilization processes.
